A Peruvian Adventure Honeymoon
A recent article in the New York Times by New York Times writer Julie Baumgardner features the Peruvian honeymoon of Helen Toomer and Eric Romano. The couple tasted exotic Peruvian cuisine, traveled the markets, and of course visited the iconic Machu Picchu.
We’re always pleased to see the growing interest in Peru. It really does offer spectacular scenery, wonderful culinary delights, and a culture that is refreshingly different.

By now it’s no secret that the culinary delicacies of Peru include guinea pig — but alpaca, too? It came as a surprise to Helen Toomer, the director of the Pulse Art Fair, when her husband Eric Romano, the founder of the art-fair production firm Space Productions, scarfed down the Andean camel with delight on their 10-day honeymoon to the Incan nation last month. “I’m of the school that I’ll try anything once. I didn’t like alpaca. Eric ate alpaca all the time,” Toomer says. “He was like, ‘Where can we get this at home?!’”
The trip, following their wedding on May 30, was the first real vacation the couple had been able to take together, thanks to demanding schedules. “That’s why Eric and I really wanted to make an adventure,” Toomer says. “Travel really resets you.” While Peru has recently been in the spotlight for its thriving contemporary art and fashion scene, the artsy duo’s travels swayed more towards the adventurous and historic, even in the country’s capital of Lima.
Between markets and Machu Picchu, Toomer and Romano trekked through the soaring Andes, Arequipa and Lago Titicaca. “We were in bed by 8 or 9 every night. It was like, ‘Oh, I’m so tired from all this fresh air,’” she says jokingly of their many hikes at extreme altitudes (some reaching 13,000 feet). And though Toomer is widely known in the art world for her superior taste in clothes and eye-catching eyewear, the trip sent fashion concerns by the wayside. “I like to maintain some sort of style, but in Peru, forget it,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve been wearing the same body warmer, which matches his, for a few days.”
While wheezing and workout gear may not sound like the most romantic of holidays, the duo’s many discoveries proved quite the opposite.
Sounds like a memorable trip, and one which more and more travelers will find appealing. From plush arrangements to “travel on the cheap,” Peru offers unique travel that can fit every budget.
Here’s just a few of the things that they saw on their romantic adventure:
Museo Larco (Lima)
Lake Titicaca
High altitude makes for huffing and puffing, but worth it…
At the Market
Machu Picchu
One of the Wonders of the Modern World, there is no other…
Peru is pretty mind blowing, and people are taking notice. It’s exceptional for Adventure travel, romantic holidays or honeymoons, Peru is a fabulous destination for all ages, and especially for those who are still young of heart and seek something new and different even as they find it in the “old.”
We certainly think so 🙂
